Last Friday, one of our PA sessions was devoted to the Role of AI in the classroom. Yes, yes it was!
It was led by a staff committee, 1/2 of which were teacher librarians. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, you want to find people in a high school who are most informed and progressive about the roe of digital tech in education, check out the librarians. “Information Technology” is their gig!
The session was excellent. They covered all of the bases- good, bad, ugly. They gave good handouts, and resources. They communicated with the board (so I don’t have to!) and gave clear guidelines about what is sanctioned- which boils down to which apps we are to ask students to use .The board has a contract with Google’s Gemini, so that’s part of it, but apparently Gemini doesn’t save data from users who interact with it. I’m going to double, triple check this.
And they created a space for teachers to share how they’ve been using generative AI in/for the classroom. I was one of five people who said, “pick me!” So, I shared my AI Image Relay activity- and got my presentation down to a tight 5 (minutes). It felt so good to be able to share it, and I received a lot of positive feedback.
But the best part is that I have joined the committee 🙂
They’re my kind of people- intellectually, pedagogically, critically.
And they’re fun!!!
